New Year, New Us?

Sorry for the long break everyone, as we're all off enjoying the holidays it becomes so easy to get carried away in the festivities. The blinding decorations and laughter with family can really distract us from everything. As we begin this new hopeful year, it’s important to take a moment to pause, reflect, and ground ourselves in gratitude. The start of a new year always feels like a clean slate—a chance to reset, refocus, and set intentions for the months ahead. While the holiday season brings joy and togetherness, it also serves as a reminder of the impact our actions have, not just on ourselves, but on the world around us.

A Thanksgiving Treat

Ahh Thanksgiving, a time when we gather around with loved ones, eat to our hearts content, and express the utmost gratitude. It’s a holiday centered on togetherness, reflection, and indulging in tradition. From the perfectly roasted turkey to the endless sides and desserts, it’s a celebration of abundance, family, and the joy of sharing. But have you ever paused to think about the impact of this holiday beyond the dining table?

While Thanksgiving fills our hearts and stomachs, it also has a larger environmental footprint than many of us realize. From the travel required to bring families together, to the food production and waste generated, to the energy used in preparing lavish meals, this one-day celebration leaves a lasting mark on the planet. According to estimates, food waste in the U.S. spikes by 25% during the holiday season, with Thanksgiving being one of the main contributors. Leftovers often go uneaten, while disposable plates, utensils, and packaging pile up in landfills.

But this doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy Thanksgiving to its fullest—it simply calls for a more mindful approach. What if we made sustainability a part of our holiday traditions? Choosing locally sourced and organic ingredients can reduce the carbon footprint of your meal while supporting local farmers. Planning portions carefully and repurposing leftovers into creative dishes can cut down on food waste. Opting for reusable tableware and decorations instead of disposable ones not only reduces waste but also creates a more elegant and personalized holiday experience.

And let’s not forget about the energy and resources used in travel. For many, Thanksgiving means crossing state lines or even the country to be with loved ones. While these moments are priceless, we can offset the environmental impact by carpooling, taking public transportation when possible, or supporting carbon offset programs.

Thanksgiving is about gratitude, and one of the greatest ways we can show gratitude is by caring for the planet that sustains us. Small, intentional changes to our traditions not only reduce our environmental footprint but also inspire those around us to do the same. This year, let’s celebrate with hearts full of love and a deeper commitment to preserving the world we’re so thankful for. After all, true gratitude extends beyond the table—it’s reflected in how we care for the people, and the planet, we call home
